Meet Mel, one of our passionate Life! facilitators. Mel is a degree qualified nutritionist and has qualifications in exercise science.
Christmas is coming and, although this year is a bit different, we know there’ll still be plenty of trifle and pavlova knocking about, so here are Mel’s practical tips for staying healthy over the festive season! And stay tuned for her beautiful recipes later this week.
- Platters: We eat more party platter food at this time of year, so make yours healthier by adding some veggie sticks, fruit, raw nuts and choose dips that are based on vegetables rather than cheese.
- Alcohol: Extra alcohol over the festive season can quickly push up your calorie intake. If you are going to drink alcohol, a dry bottle of bubbles such as "brut" has lower sugar, and therefore lower calories than other varieties. Or opt for a vodka with soda and fresh lime. Drink plenty of water too and remember that it’s recommended that you don’t have more than four standard drinks on any day and have at least two alcohol free days a week.
- Dinners out: When eating out, try to add a side salad or vegetables. Most restaurant meals don't include a good serve of veggies or salad. Adding salad or vegetables can help you feel more satisfied and reduce cravings for dessert.
