Meet Ryan, a Life! facilitator
Ryan Mifsud is an exercise physiologist and the Health Club & Clinical Manager at WaterMarc in Greensborough. He is passionate about good health and delivering the Life! program.
What do you enjoy most about being a Life! facilitator?
We have celebrities and influencers on various media platforms that plug the wrong health and fitness information for a quick dollar. They get rich by preying on our communities’ lack of knowledge and insecurities and confuse people about what is right and wrong.
The Life! program is a way we can fight back and give our community the RIGHT information for sustained health and wellbeing. It is very rewarding when the penny drops for our participants – I know they will step into the world and be able to filter out all the ‘get abs in 10mins’ and ‘lose 10kg in two weeks’ messages and be able to spread the good word that nothing beats moderation and consistent effort!
Could you share any particular success stories or memorable participants?
They all have their own success story – many have struggled with getting their health under control and are finally seeing some progress being made. Any progress is fantastic. These ladies and gents have acknowledged that they need to do something, they’ve made a commitment and followed through. Everyone on the program is to be commended.
What are some of the common challenges your participants face?
Life tends to get in the way. Sickness, traffic, work, holidays, injuries… All of these issues come up and has caused people to miss sessions. We run a make-up session between session 4 and 5 to ensure everyone is on track and doesn’t miss out on any important information.
Which session and topics do your participants enjoy or find useful?
The session with the dietitian is always popular. As is the physical activity session (session 3) where I demonstrate how you can fit in 40-60 minutes of physical activity a day through watching TV. Most of us watch TV for 2-3 hours a day and there’s roughly 40-60 minutes of ad breaks during this time… no one wants to watch ads! So why not do some chair-based exercises during this time? You can get through a full body workout during the cumulative total of ad time!
What advice would you give someone thinking about doing the Life! program?
Give it a go. You have nothing to lose. If you pick up just one or two things from the program, you will have gained plenty.
How do you keep fit and healthy?
I work out 3-4 days a week and swim once or twice. I play cricket on Saturdays and eat the food everyone else eats – I just don’t overeat!
