Cultural Diversity Week
This won’t come as a surprise to many of you, but over a quarter of Victorians were born overseas and almost half were either born overseas, or have a parent who was born overseas.
Different cultures and languages make for many diverse communities in Victoria.
As it is Cultural Diversity Week, we thought it would be timely to let you know about the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Life! program. A type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke prevention program that has, so far, been delivered to over 15 different CALD community groups across Victoria.
The aim of the CALD Life! program is to deliver preventative health and healthy lifestyle information in a culturally appropriate way using culturally appropriate resources. Program delivery is supported by bilingual health facilitators and English speaking facilitators who are assisted by an interpreter.
The CALD Life! program currently has course delivery, AUSDRISK tools and participant workbooks available in:
- Chinese Traditional (Cantonese)
- CALD English (plain English)
The course is delivered over 6 group sessions where participants learn about;
- Healthy eating
- Physical activity
- Setting goals
- Stress, relaxation and sleeping better
The CALD Life! program is continuing to grow. Over 60 courses have been delivered and during this financial year, groups have been delivered in 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
