Aboriginal Road to Good Health
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience much higher levels of chronic disease – particularly diabetes and heart disease, compared to non-Aboriginal Australians. The good news is that studies show it is possible to prevent type 2 diabetes. By eating a more nutritious diet and being physically active, people can reduce the risk of developing these and other diseases.
The Road to Good Health program is designed to support Aboriginal Health Workers and health professionals working with Aboriginal communities to promote healthy lifestyles and encourage individuals, families and community groups make healthy lifestyle choices.
Road to Good Health benefits:
- helps you choose healthier habits so you can be strong for your family and community;
- teaches you how to prevent type 2 diabetes and other problems like heart disease and high blood pressure;
- is run by Aboriginal Health Workers and Aboriginal health services; and
- is FREE, and you can do it with your partner, a friend or family member.
You will learn:
- how different foods affect your health;
- what food is good, cheap and easy;
- how to spend your food money;
- how to maintain a healthy weight;
- what to look for on a food label;
- how to get active and stay on track;
- choosing healthy foods; and
- how to prevent diabetes.

Working together - local partnerships and support
In early 2016, the VAHS Healthy Lifestyle and Tackling Tobacco Team worked in collaboration with the Diabetes Victoria Life! team to integrate Life!’s Road to Good Health, a type 2 diabetes prevention program for Aboriginal people and their families, into VAHS’s Six Week Challenge.
